Plants For The Garden
By admin | June 27, 2008
Once you have decided what your garden should look like and what garden furniture you want you need to decide on plants, choosing and buying plants can be confusing to say the least, there are so many to choose from, different types, colours, sizes, and species, there are some that need little to no care some that need a lot of attention to thrive properly, visiting the local garden centre or plant shop will expose you to a massive variety of plants that are usually well labelled with their Latin names and what variation if any, the first part of the name is the plant group, the genus and the second part is the species, there are usually pictures of the flowers and the type of care they need, there is always someone around that can help you choose if you feel need assistance.
High turnover stores may have healthier plants because of the older ones would have sold, inspecting the plant is important, to check roots tip the plant out of the pot a healthy plant will have roots that hold the soil together as well as lots of creamy white young roots, over watering and under watering can both have severe effects on a plant, if the soil is cracked and or pulled away from the sides of the pot or the plant is wilting this is a sign of under watering, if the soil is damp and smells and the roots looked damaged with rotting foliage this is a sign of over watering, you should also check for disease and pests, make sure the leaves and flowers look healthy and are free from bugs, moulds and are the right colour, shape and texture for that particular plant.
The choice of which plants to choose is more difficult than checking its health, there are many different types that flower at different times of the year, some last a year, some more than two, trees and shrubs last even longer and continue to thrive for decades and even centuries. Usually plant choice is made on personal likes for shapes, colours and hardiness. We all want a beautifully blooming garden year after that lasts through all the seasons and needs no tending but this is not possible, there are some perennials that will flower for years with little care if the weather is right, they can survive our worst winters and as long as they watered and fed as necessary will last for many years. Most plants bought from a specialists store or DIY, garden centre will come in pots and will have been cared for ready for re-planting into you garden, the plants you choose must suit the conditions that your garden offers, soil quality, amount of sunlight and shade through the day, drainage etc, but you are sure to find some lovely plants that will thrive in your garden and make it a riot of colours.
