Looking For Gardening Ideas? Why Gardening Is Beneficial For You

By Frank | April 23, 2008

Gardening is one of the activities which can be called universal. In every country and culture, gardening is practiced in one form or the other; everyone that has a house or backyard would want to beautify that small plot of land that is their backyard – it’s almost instinctive! But the demands of daily life have so taken over society, that we have largely forgotten this most basic of practices. So why on earth, should you do gardening? Here are the 3 top reasons.

The first reason would be the health benefits. Maybe we all have heard of a standing joke that most people take up gardening when they retire from work, but far from being an activity for seniors, gardening is great for any age. The gentle exercise, bending and stretching when carrying out tasks such as weeding and pruning, can help keep the body both strong and supple while keeping joints healthy and pain free. Gardening makes you go out and fill your lungs with fresh air. And all these are beneficial at ANY age.

The second reason is personal sense of achievement. Ask any gardener if he derives personal satisfaction from gardening and the answer would certainly be yes. At the end of the day, gardening is simply a means to achieve a sense of inner peace, knowing that you can control your very own little world. Simply spending time in a garden, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells around us, can invoke a powerful sense of belonging and spiritual peace. When we nurture a garden, we unknowingly increase our connection and our sense of wellbeing.

Gardening, in the form of Horticultural Therapy, is a great form of therapy for the physically disabled, and gives them a new lease on life. For example, horticultural therapists have discovered that gardening provides a form of emotional expression and release, and it helps people to connect with others. The psychological benefits of being outdoors, working in the sunshine and fresh air, are also clear. People often report feeling a lot better within, after they have done some gardening. Apparently, gardening nurtures more than nature, it nurtures the human soul.

The third reason is communion. By this, I mean you commune to the earth, or Mother Nature, and if you involve your family in your gardening, then you also establish a greater rapport with them. Children generally like having fun, and helping their parents out in the garden. Also, gardening will instill a greater sense of awareness about the state of the environment, and a need to preserve it, within you and your kids! In today’s day and age, an age of global warming, such awareness is necessary, because it’s obvious the earth cannot simply go on without the cooperation of every human being on earth.
