Jewelry Cleaners

By admin | December 7, 2007

A good jewelry cleaner is extremely important for keeping your jewelry looking as nice as it should, but it can be a little bit difficult finding the one that best suits your collection.  If you are interested in keeping your jewelry looking in good condition, there are few things you should keep in mind when looking for a good jewelry cleaner.

You should never use a jewelery cleaner that is stronger than the frailest piece of jewelry in your collection; because of this rule, many people clean their jewelry in lots that are divided up in accordance to the durability of the stones.  For instance, gold, silver and platinum are all relatively hardy materials that be cleaned together, while pearls, opals and rubies are all porous, meaning that they require gentler handling.  While there are some all-purpose jewelry cleaners available, they are often too mild for durable materials and still too harsh for more fragile pieces.

If you are concerned about your pieces, you may wish to speak to a professional jeweler.  Many jewelry stores will allow you leave pieces to be cleaned, and if your collection has many more fragile pieces, this might be for the best.  When looking into a jewelry cleaner, you have many options.  A jewelry store can recommend a good one, or you can even try making one yourself!

While you should never use anything except a specialized cleaner or warm water on your softer gems, you can always mix up a mild solution of non-detergent soap and warm water for gold or silver jewelery.  Soak the pieces in the solution for a few minutes before gently rinsing them with warm water, and then pat dry.  When dealing with softer stones, try just a quick soak in warm water followed by drying with a soft cloth.  You can also use a soft brush to dislodge some of the more stubborn grime.

If you are looking for a more thorough jewelry cleaner, you may wish to purchase an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.  This small machine has a compartment that you fill with soap and water.  You close the cleaner and then start it, at which time, small bubbles will move through the water and gently knock off the grime.  This is gentle enough that stones and settings won’t be damaged, although you should definitely look for directions concerning more fragile stones.

Finding the right jewelery cleanser is of the utmost importance for keeping your gems looking their best, so make sure you take a careful look around!
