An Evening Garden

By admin | July 28, 2008

There is no point in going to a lot of trouble to grow patio plants which are at their best during the day when you are stuck in the office. An evening garden can really add to your enjoyment of a gazebo. I would just plant a mixture of night scented flowers in a bed or a really big planter right next to the gazebo. Much less work than lots of little pots and it will be at its very best around dusk, making a sort of misty, ghostly garden. Go for nicotiana (tobacco plant), night scented stocks and Datura stramonium if you can get it (you will probably have to grow it yourself from seed). They all have pastel coloured flowers that show up well in low light but you could add other white or pale mauve flowers with strong shapes, even if they do not have any scent, to make more of a show. Go for white delphiniums(for tall upright spikes), eryngium (sea holly, for knobbly flowers and structural foliage) and gypsophila (for billowing white frothy foamy shapes) - you will have to grow those in a bed as they are all too big even for large containers.
