A home garden is a spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. While most of us spend considerable amounts of time and money in picking out the best of garden furniture, not many give furniture maintenance the quality time it deserves.
How you maintain your garden furniture depends on a number of factors, including its material composition and exposure to natural elements. For instance, several owners of teak furniture prefer to retain the original golden-brown color of the wood. This can be done by applying several coats of teak oil or sealer, which act as protective ‘skin’. Also, natural rattan garden furniture requires a fair share of attention and care if you wish for it to lead a damage-free life. Typically, they require a layer of lacquer to protect them from discoloration caused due to continuous contact with the sun. One must avoid leaving rattan furniture in moist conditions to evade mould attacks.
Décor items such as patio parasols need to be cleaned at least once every three months. Make sure you keep a regular check for any broken ribs and rusting on poles of the parasols. An easy way to restore a faded parasol is to dye the fabric regularly.
Remember to take special care when you install garden equipment such as patio heaters. For the purpose of long-term maintenance, make sure that the patio heater is placed in a semi-open space to protect it from extreme weather and dust. Make sure that 2.5 to 3 feet of space is left as clearance area to avoid unwanted fires. Regularly check for blockages such as dust, leaves, bugs, etc.
Having said this, taking care of garden furniture is not as difficult at is sounds. All it needs is a little commitment and discipline that allows you to enjoy your investment for years to come.
